CBD and Hemp Testing via HPLC

HPLC Testing Service

Our standard testing service will quantify 10 common cannabinoids: CBDV, CBGa, CBN, CBG, CBD, d9-THC, d8-THC, THCa, and CBDa concentrations in the sample you provide using an analytical method known as HPLC testing. By testing your Hemp or CBD product, you ensure you’re A) compliant and B) accurately depicting the amount of CBD in your product. Our typical turnaround time is 1-3 business days from receiving your sample. Please read further to find out how to submit a sample.

Samples We Can Test

We can test wet or dry hemp flower, hemp extract (crude/distillate), tincture products, as well as topicals (lotions/balms/salves), and CBD food products.

Preparing a Hemp Flower Sample For Testing

1. Collect ~2 grams of plant material from the part of the plant you’d like tested. For most, this will be the flower portion of the plant. Please remove all non-flower aspects of plant or all aspects you do not wish to have tested (e.g. stems, leaves, etc.).
2. Place sample in a ziplock bag. One zip-locked bag must be used for each different sample to prevent cross-contamination
3. Label each bag using whatever labeling scheme you desire, and fill out our Chain of Custody Form accordingly.
4. Mail to our address, or drop your samples off at our facility during normal business hours.

Notes: Fresh samples should not be dried. We will handle this aspect of sample preparation to ensure quality results. However, flower harvested and properly dried is satisfactory for submission. Also, if you’d like to collect samples over the course of a few days and send them in all at once, we recommend keeping samples in the fridge until shipment.

Preparing a CBD Extract Sample (Crude, Distillate) for Testing

1. Obtain a small, solid container to send your samples in.
2. Place ~1 gram of concentrate in a glass vial or test tube. One container must be used per sample.
3. Label each container using whatever labeling scheme you desire, and fill out our Chain of Custody Form accordingly.
4. Ensure that the glass vials are secured in such a way that they will not break in the mail. Gently wrapping a paper towel around each vial is a good way to prevent any of them from breaking.
5. Mail to our address, or drop your samples off at our facility during normal business hours.

Preparing a Food Product or Topical For Testing

1. Place a ~3 gram of the sample in a plastic bag or container. One container must be used per sample.
2. Label each container using whatever labeling scheme you desire, and fill out our Chain of Custody Form accordingly.
3. Mail to our address, or drop your samples off at our facility during normal business hours.

Certificate of Analysis

You will be be emailed your results in a Certificate of Analysis (COA) as soon as it is ready (usually 1-3 business days from receiving the sample). The COA will include the test results of the following ten cannabinoids: CBDV, CBGa, CBN, CBG, CBD, d9-THC, d8-THC, THCa, and CBDa

HPLC Testing General Information

We use high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure the concentration of cannabinoids (e.g. CBD) in your sample(s). HPLC instruments are used to quantify a large assortment of different compounds, however, our system is specifically designed to detect cannabinoids and our method was created to properly test hemp and CBD products.

CBD, THC, and Other Cannabinoids

The cannabis (hemp) plant synthesizes over 100 known compounds classified as cannabinoids. THC is the most well-known cannabinoid, but CBD is becoming common knowledge as well. CBG, CBN, CBC, and many other minor cannabinoids make up a complex recipe of cannabinoids that is unique to each strain. Genetics predominately govern the plant’s cannabinoid profile but grow conditions, weather, and post-harvest handling all have some influence. The Grower’s Dilemma – Why Should I Test?

THC and CBD are the most important cannabinoids for most growers: THC levels must be below 0.3% to comply with state and federal laws and CBD levels should be maximized to maximize the hemp’s value. However, these compounds increase in unison. Harvesting early means low THC levels but also minimal CBD levels. Harvesting late will mean higher THC levels (and risking a non-compliant crop). The only way to know the best time to harvest is by using potency testing.

We recommend getting multiple tests of your plot over the course of multiple weeks leading up to harvest. This allows us to develop a THC/CBD profile and gives the grower an idea of how THC/CBD levels are progressing.
